Community Development Print E-mail

Westray, along with other Orkney isles communities, now has a designated Community Development Officer in place until the end of September 2011. This is a result of a partnership between Westray Development Trust, Orkney Islands Council and Highlands & Islands Enterprise and has been funded by the LEADER programme.

Corinne Curtis was appointed to this post at the beginning of February 2010 and has already begun the process of networking, consulting and gathering information.

The key objective of community development is to promote and pursue the sustainable growth of the Westray community.   The first task is to produce a new Community Growth Plan in consultation with the Westray community, and then to identify and prioritise projects within it. Generation of sustainable community income is an important part of any community growth plan, and we are well on the way to this with our turbine already up and running.

This is a very exciting time for Westray: we have the resources to develop the plan; the requirement for community input and a community mandate are written into the process; and some of the resources to kick start implementation are also there.
