It had been the wish of the Westray Golf Club for some time to either secure a long term lease on the course or to take it into ownership so that funds could be accessed to upgrade the facility. The lease of this 59 acre field had been continued on an informal year to year basis. When the course came up for sale the Westray Golf Club approached Westray Development Trust to assist them secure the land, which was progressed, and in September 2005 WDT secured 95% funding from the Scottish Land Fund and the Community Land Unit. WGC had previously agreed if the bid was successful they could afford to fund the 5% shortfall in recognition of a long term lease. At the moment the course is playable but is not being used to its full potential due to coastal erosion and rabbit holes. About 15 acre at the coast has gradually eroded over the years. The aim is to restore this area. Work is underway to clear the area of rabbits; a rabbit proof fence is already in place. The course could then be extended making full use of the whole area. Funding for the Redevelopment of the course is being worked on and the aim is to complete the project in August 2011. The project works will be split into three phases;
The course will provide golf recreational benefits for young and old as well adding a social area with picnic benches and joining in with already existing pathways for walking routes The links course will provide an all year option for all of Orkney's golfers Below is a draft plan of the redeveloped course, a pond and putting green are to be added.
