In many ways how we learn new things has changed because of the introduction of new technologies which have brought opportunities into our communities in a way unimaginable previously.  In many other respects the reasons people want to learn new things has changed very little over time.  People want to engage in learning for:

• personal development,
• learning something new,
• enjoying a challenge,
• getting a qualification,
• learning what it takes to run a community group or voluntary body,
• overcoming disadvantage or disability
• taking up opportunities missed out on earlier in life …

The Learning Centre offers taster sessions and a course for computing beginners; courses for those with some experience who want IT qualifications to get a job or enhance their career prospects; or for those who just want to get more out of their computer. 

The centre also offers access to its facilities for study, internet access, video conferencing and is available as a venue for meetings, courses and workshops.

Big Lottery Funding Objectives

Under the terms of the current Big Lottery funding the aim is to stimulate rural economic development by providing improved access to further education, training and job opportunities through the Westray Learning Centre delivering 50 additional course places per annum within three years.
